The Bible in a section on prayer books? Why not! The Bible is not only a treasure trove of information and inspiration about our Catholic faith, its founding by Jesus Christ, and its antecedents in Old Testament history. It’s also a great source of prayer, especially in the Psalms! The Catholic Church makes extensive use of both the Psalms and Scripture texts in the Liturgy of the Hours, the special daily prayers and readings said by religious, and some of the laity as well. And, of course, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, one of our greatest opportunities for prayer in the Eucharist, covers the Bible quite extensively in the Liturgy of the Word. This volume, published by Our Sunday Visitor, is the New American Bible Revised Edition, which was first released in 2011. It is very reasonably priced. If you feel intimidated by the Bible, there’s no need! You can start with the Gospels and our Lord’s earthly ministry and work your way both past and forward from there. Don’t forget that the Bible also contains the Lord’s Prayer, the Magnificat, and many good scripture verses to help you in your mediations while praying the Rosary, such those found in Luke’s Gospel. This edition has informative introductions to each of the Bible’s 73 Books (46 in the Old Testament and 27 In the New Testament) as well as helpful footnotes and cross references for many verses. It also has good subject headings to guide you through various chapters about the likes of such towering figures as Abraham, King David the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah, and, of course, Our Lord Jesus Christ! And remember, you don’t have to try to read the Bible cover to cover to get a great deal of value and satisfaction out of it. For example, if you’re a relative beginner to this great work, try reading the books of Wisdom or Sirach (called Ben Sira in this edition) in addition to the Gospels, for some timeless words of advice on how to live a life pleasing to God that can bring you great joy and peace of mind! St. Jerome is famous for saying that ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ. Deepen your knowledge of Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit with this timeless work. It will strengthen your Catholic faith as well! 1926 pp.; Paperback
