This quotation from the prophet Isaiah, foretelling Christ’s Passion, might have indeed been on our Lord’s mind when He was arrested at the Garden of Gethsemane. He told Peter at that moment that he must suffer and die for us so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled for our salvation (Matt 26:54). The Crown of Thorns that our Lord received soon after, shown in this painting, was a part of His suffering and sacrifice for us in His Passion for our Eternal Life!
