The Rosary in Action, by John S. Johnson, a layperson, offers us a very useful guide to the Rosary. This book, first published in 1954, is aptly described on its cover as “compendium of information about and a call to renewed devotion to the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Mr. Johnson discusses the history of this great prayer, and offers some insightful meditations on its Mysteries, including interesting historical information on the lives of Jesus and Mary based on the Gospels.

For those who feel intimidated by the Rosary, Johnson has a chapter called “Some Practical Helps” and another useful section of “Dangers to Avoid” in prayer. He also has a section on meditation itself. He writes as a layperson for other laypeople, and it shows! This book is as accessible as it is informative!
