This moving, informative booklet pays tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of Sorrows. We often focus during Lent, particularly with such devotions as the Stations of the Cross, on how much Christ’s suffered for us in His Passion.
However, think for a minute of just how much agony Our Lady endured along with her Divine Son at Calvary. Indeed, His heart-wrenching misery and pain for our salvation became hers as well. Her sacrifice of her Son for us in union with him was so great that, as St. Alphonsus Liguori once said, as quoted in this booklet “two hung upon one cross.”
Although Mary did not suffer as our Lord did physically, emotionally her grief was such that, as He once revealed to St. Mechtilde, her heart was “pierced by thousands of swords, both during My Passion and death, and afterwards when she remembered these dreadful torments.”
The Blessed Mother herself once revealed to Blessed Henry Suso, that “all the grief ever endured by a human heart would be as a drop of water to the vast ocean compared to the fathomless grief and anguish that my maternal heart endured at the foot of the Cross!”
This booklet draws on scripture, tradition, and writings from the Saints such as these mentioned above to give us poignant testimony as to the importance of devotion to the Sorrowful Mother. Mary is more than happy to help us resist temptations and carry our crosses if we offer thoughts and prayers to her in remembrance of her sorrows on our behalf.
She will also give special help and protection at the hour of death to those who practice this devotion. Fortunately, this booklet provides many prayers and some meditations to help us as we contemplate her Sorrows. These include:
- Prayers and Promises of the Seven Sorrows of Mary
- The Rosary of the Seven Dolors
- The famous prayer Stabat Mater
- The Litany of the Sorrowful Mother
- A special Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows by St. Bridget
- A number of other good prayers and offerings to our Sorrowful Mother
Comfort our Blessed Mother in her afflictions with the help of this booklet and she will more than do the same for you! 68 pp.; Paperback
