Lazarus, Come Out
$5.00

This painting depicts the famous scene from John’s Gospel is which Christ brings his friend Lazarus back from the dead with just the command “Lazarus, Come out” (John 11:43). John recounts how Lazarus has been dead for four days as this point. How could he possibly come out of his tomb? And yet, of course he does! As our Lord said on another occasion “with God, all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26)

This miracle sets the stage for Christ’s Passion. His hour is about to arrive, when He will give Himself up to be put to death on a cross for our salvation. The chief priests and the Pharisees are now determined to kill Jesus, fearing that His miracles will attract so many followers as to provoke the wrath of the Roman occupiers.

Yet our Lord means to conquer death, not the Romans! His death and Resurrection will enable us to share Eternal Life with Him when we pass away. As he tells Martha shortly before raising Lazarus from the dead “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, even if he dies, shall live; and whoever lives and believes in me, shall never die (John 11:25-26).”
