This painting, like a couple of the others in this series, captures the sense of darkness that fell over Jerusalem when Jesus was crucified. St. Luke records in his Gospel that an eclipse of the sun took place then. It eerily highlighted, along with an earthquake that shook Jerusalem, the momentous events taking place.

Some of the Roman soldiers keeping watch over our Lord in His agony, shown in this painting as well, had second thoughts at that moment as to who this condemned criminal really was. Scripture tells us of some among them who at that point exclaimed “Truly, he was the Son of God.” (Matt: 28:54)

The caption for this print features our Lord's last words before His death on the cross. Christ has accomplished His Sacred Mission. His death and resurrection will open up the gates of heaven for us so that we might share eternity with Him there.
